Why You Need To Start Purifying Your Air

Why You Need To Start Purifying Your Air

Many things contribute to the air in your home, and much of it comes from inside the house. Purifying your air is a great way to eliminate particles in the air you breathe.

The Benefits of Pure Air

Pure air is not a given, unfortunately, and air purifiers can make sure one of the essential human functions (breathing) is a beneficial process. Eliminating harmful contaminants from the air inside your home can help with allergies, general health, sleep, and comfort.

A really good air purifier can trap small particles and prevent them from reaching your lungs. Even if not immediately impacting your health, these contaminants can have long-term effects that come back to hurt you in the future.

If you have allergies, you’re probably aware of the unique causes, but some of the most common are pet dander, pollen, and dust mites. Even if you generally have these symptoms under control, an air purifier can help at night while you’re sleeping.

Air purifiers can also reduce odors if you live in an area with outdoor pollution or have odor-causing items around the house. No more covering up with aerosol spray — air purifiers can treat these odors at the source.

What Gets Filtered

The particles that get filtered largely depend on the air purifier type, specifically the machine’s filter. HEPA filters are the most effective at removing common particles harmful to your health.

Most air purifiers will target the most common allergens like pollen, dust, and pet dander. It should be noted that an air purifier won’t dust surfaces for you (you still need a duster, sorry!), but it can help reduce the dust that gets thrown into the air.

Some filters can even filter out germs, which can help your family stay healthy at home.

What is a HEPA Filter?

As stated previously, HEPA filters are the best option for filtering out contaminants. HEPA, which stands for “high-efficiency particulate air,” and can filter out particles down to 0.3 microns in size.

HEPA filters are made from a pleated mechanical material that traps particles collected by an attached fan. They are rated based on efficiency and the ability to filter different-sized particles. A higher rating (on the 1-16 scale) means the unit can filter out more particles.

Who Benefits from Purifying Your Air

Not everyone will see a noticeable difference from an air purifier, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t working. People without allergies or asthma will likely not see much difference after purifying the air since they had no symptoms. But eliminating harmful particles from the air can still prevent them from causing long-term health issues.

You will also benefit if you live in an area with the high air pollution that infiltrates your home. No matter your reason, cleaner air is cleaner air and is never a bad thing.

Types of Purifiers

Air purifiers generally come in two “sizes:” whole-home and portable. Portable purifiers look similar to humidifiers in that they are standalone units that can be plugged in anywhere. The benefit to these are that they can be used at will and only when you need them. If you want to have it in your office during the day, then next to your bed when you sleep, you have that freedom.

Whole-home systems are built directly into your existing HVAC infrastructure. Again, the filters are doing the bulk of the work, but some systems also have a UV light, eliminating airborne viruses and bacteria.
